Community Center Lushnje

Pastor Sajmir and his wife Irma have built such an active church community in Lushnje that they have outgrown their premises. Together with Sajmir, Irma, the Hope for Albania Foundation, and Mozaik Church in Norway, we went looking for a new location. And we found one! A three-story building with enough space and possibilities for church services and all activities. This did mean that extensive renovations were necessary. With the help of a contractor and various groups from the Netherlands, the necessary work was done, resulting in a beautiful accommodation.

Update: Community Centre in Lushnje is geopend!

During the Businesswise trip in October 2024, the first service was held in the new Community Center. A special moment!

Sajmir and Irma: stable NDI partners and role models for Roma youth

Sajmir and his wife Irma have been partners of NDI for many years. They have been serving the local Roma community since 2016 at the Mozaik Church in Lushnje. This passionate couple is devoted to God and fully committed to supporting the local population. They offer support to socially vulnerable families through education and coaching. They also provide daily tutoring and homework assistance for children.
Sajmir and Irma, both Roma themselves, are role models for the young people in their community because of their positive attitude toward life. They are also role models because they were able to attend university, which is exceptional among the Roma, especially for women.

“We believe that education can change children's lives – just as it did for us”

– Sajmir, pastor Mozaik Church

About the Roma in Albania

The Roma in Albania are discriminated against and excluded, and often live in social isolation. They are among the poorest people in the country. Many Roma have no access to education, healthcare, or decent housing. Education would be the best way to escape poverty and crime. However, due to high illiteracy rates, poor roads to school, racism, and bullying, school attendance among Roma children is low. The children who do attend school regularly fall far behind because they receive little attention from teachers and their parents, who often cannot read or write themselves, are unable to help them with their homework. Reason enough for Sajmir, Irma, and the Mozaik Church to make an extra effort for the future of these children.

Active and engaged community at Mozaik

Sajmir and Irma want to motivate Roma children to go to school by helping them with their homework, distributing backpacks and school supplies, and offering after-school care. But that is only part of the activities that take place in the church.
